From top to bottom or visa-versa depending on who you talk to, Gibbston Valley unofficially begins at the state highway bridge just before the Kawarau Suspension Bridge and stretches far beyond the last winery, through the dramatic Nevis Bluff, ending at the final bridge before the Kawarau Gorge.

From Chard Farm to Brennan Wines and all the stunning venues in between, Gibbston is a world-class destination just waiting to be discovered on our E-Bike adventures. From sommeliers with a nose for fine vintages to outdoor enthusiasts craving breathtaking scenery, and everyone in between. Gibbston has something for everyone - families, couples, and solo riders alike.

So make sure you've got your thick socks packed and let’s dive in and uncover the treasures that line State Highway 6 through the legendary Valley of the Vines.

Chard Farm Winery

Distance from Kawarau Suspension Bridge : 3kms

The Tuscan feel of Chard Farm Winery.
The Tuscan feel of Chard Farm Winery.

First up is Chard Farm Winery, nestled against the dramatic mountains on the opposite bank of the river. With its rustic vineyards and unmistakable Tuscan flair, this place feels like a slice of the Italian countryside transplanted into Gibbston. As one of the valley’s oldest vineyards (though its vines were planted as recently as the 1980s), Chard Farm offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s youthful winemaking legacy.

Like all the wineries here, Chard Farm is steeped in local history. The staff love sharing tales of the valley over a tasting at their stunning cellar door, where the stories flow as freely as the wine.

To get here, head past the Bungy Centre at the Kawarau Suspension Bridge and follow the Gibbston River Trail until a small clearing on the right, signposted Chard Farm. You must cross the highway so proceed with caution and look both ways. The winery road heads up the hill and along a stunning Poplar lined track high above the river with stunning views of the Kawarau River and the confluence with the Arrow River.

There is no restaurant onsite so make sure you fill up before you make the trip along the road.

Visiting Details:

Hours : Open year-round (11am–5pm), closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and Good Friday.

ANZAC Day : Opens at 1pm.

Bookings are essential for tastings. Please call ahead or visit their website to secure your spot.

AJ Hackett Bungy Centre

Back at the Bungy centre you'll find all the thrills and adrenaline fuelled adventures of the Valley. The world's first commercial Bungy jumping operations began right here in 1988. Led by pioneering daredevil AJ Hackett and his business partner Henry Van Ashe, the team at the Bungy Centre has evolved and grown through the years and now have an impressive - bunker style - centre, built deep into the hillside.

There's a bar and cafe onsite so if jumping isn't your thing, you can always grab a seat and watch other people throw themselves off the bridge or ride the Zipline.

Inside on the big screen they show a video of the history of Bungy jumping on loop for you to learn all about the shenanigans throughout their colourful history.

In the onsite shop there's also a very interesting book written by AJ that documents all of his triumphs and failures on the way to becoming the global superstar he is today! Well worth a read.

Peregrine Winery

Architecturally striking, Peregrine Winery sits halfway down the valley trail on the left-hand side. Its iconic, sweeping roof—designed to mimic the rotation of a peregrine falcon’s wing in flight—spans the entire length of the building. Since its debut in 2003, this visionary design has earned awards and captivated visitors and wine-industry insiders alike, thanks to its bold use of space and dramatic lighting.

And the wines? They soar just as high. With accolades to rival the building’s fame, Peregrine’s vintages grace the menus of top restaurants and bars across New Zealand—and the world.

The Gibbston Tavern

Step into the warm embrace of The Gibbston Tavern, where owners Karine and Pete Robertson have perfected the art of making every guest feel like family. The moment you walk up the path, you’re greeted by the crackle of the wood-fired oven, the rich aroma of bubbling cheese and charred dough mingling with the earthy scent of mulled wine spices. Sink into a corner inside by the fireplace, or claim a sunny spot on the garden patio under a heater.

The artwork on the both the building and the wine bottles adds to the character of the winery and service levels are up there with the best. Kinross Winery & Cottages

Kinross' stupidly delicious Pizza!
Kinross' stupidly delicious Pizza!

Kinross Winery has earned its reputation as our crew favourite, and for good reason. Situated halfway down the valley on the right side of the highway, this charming venue delivers an exceptional experience from start to finish. Their wines are outstanding, the service is warm and knowledgeable, and let’s not forget the star of the show – what might just be the best pizza in the region! We’ve recommended their Mushroom and Truffle Butter pizza almost as often as we’ve enjoyed it ourselves; it’s truly that memorable.

The recent addition of their brand new cellar door takes the experience to another level. From $25, guests can sample selections from five different local wineries – incredible value for those looking to explore Gibbston’s diverse offerings. For visitors seeking something more exclusive, Kinross offers premium tasting experiences like their "Behind the Vines" option, which provides a personal, immersive tasting right among the vines where the magic happens.

Whether you’re here for the wine, the food, or the complete experience, Kinross consistently delivers quality at every turn. It’s no wonder this place has become such a beloved staple in the valley.

This beautifully preserved 1895 Presbyterian church has found new life as one of Gibbston's most unique dining and wine destinations. The Church offers a complete wine country experience featuring Mount Edward wines and their estate-grown Stronsay Shanagolden Chardonnay. Their in-house chef crafts a seasonal menu showcasing local specialties, available alongside a selection of regional beers and wines. Beyond the excellent food and drink, the Church has a great reputation for cozt afternoons playing games at the table. Whether it's cards or bananagrams, it's a must do!

Open everyday from 11am to 6pm, The Church has become a beloved gathering place for both locals and visitors.

Reservations are recommended for dining, though the welcoming atmosphere makes it equally enjoyable for just a wine tasting or casual drink. Mt Rosa Winery

Distance from Kawarau Suspension Bridge : 14kms

Not bad...Mt Rosa
Not bad...Mt Rosa

What began as a dream of high-country sheep farming soon transformed into an exciting wine adventure when the Railton family recognised Gibbston’s potential for exceptional Pinot Noir. Facing tough grazing conditions and declining wool prices, they took a bold leap, inspired by their winemaking neighbours and fuelled by a shared love of good wine (and a few "tipples" along the way).

What we have today is a lively little winery at the bottom of the valley. Full of colourful energy year round, Mt Rosa ticks all the boxes. Amazing wines paired with great food and infectious, local service give you a fabulous insight into the local scene.

Bookings are preferred, especially if you're in a group. Call ahead or book online here.

Cellar door is open daily from 11-5pm.

Brennan Winery

Distance from Kawarau Suspension Bridge : 15kms

What was, until a short while ago, the last stop on the Gibbston Back Road for public wineries, Brennan is sometimes overlooked or actually not even known about. While the bigger venues along the highway get most of the trade, Brennan quietly go about their business of making exceptional wines, all onsite!

Our favourite Pinot The B2 lives here and if you're looking for a delicious Rose, look no further. If the weather's not too bad you can jump on their outdoor Petanque court for a game of balls.

Self served tastings start from just $16 and you'll not be disappointed by the wines on offer. You can also pair the vino with local artisan cheeses and charcouterie boards from the kitchen.

OPen year round from 11-5pm daily. Bookings are recommended by calling 034424315 or jumping online here.

Waitiri Creek Winery

Distance from Kawarau Suspension Bridge : 15kms

Across the road from Brennan sits Waitiri Creek, another small, tin clad woolshed winery offering a great selection of wines and light bites from the chef. This winery marks the end of the publicly open wineries on the back road although, cycling back around to Mt Edward on Coal Pit Road is a n adventure in itself!

Perched up on the hill you get a great view of the valley but inside you'll find all the warmth and comfort that you'd expect from Gibbston establishments. Cosy and a little quieter than the bigger wineries, here you may be able to relax and unwind as little more as you let the days riding leave your body before getting picked up for the ride home.

Cellar door is open daily from 11-6pm but be sure to check ahead on public holidays as some information may not be available on the website. Reservations and any other info can be found here.
