It may still be a few months from completion but the hype is real people! We're going to be seeing one of, if not THE best trail the South Island has to offer, open to the public in around 6 months. Let's have a look at everything we know so far about the project and what you can expect when the tape is finally cut on the Kawarau Gorge Trail.
The Kawarau Gorge Trail : New Zealand's Most Anticipated Trail!
Mark your calendars, in just six months (approx at time of writing and due to change depending on engineering challenges), one of the South Island's most spectacular trails will open to the public. The Kawarau Gorge Trail, a 36km masterpiece of engineering and natural beauty, is set to become an instant classic, we think ranking among the top 5 rides in all of New Zealand.
A Trail years in the Making.
The dream began over six years ago with an ambitious plan to link Queenstown’s Gibbston River Trail with Bannockburn’s world-class wineries and the Dunstan Trail network. When complete, this route will create a seamless connection between some of Otago’s most iconic cycling trails, including the Otago Rail Trail, Dunstan Trail, and Clutha Gold Trail, while unlocking access to landscapes few have ever seen up close.
A River of Legends. Now Accessible to All.
For centuries, the mighty Kawarau River (Car-Wah-Row) has carved its way from Lake Wakatipu through the floor of the Gibbston Valley and the cliffs of the Kawarau Gorge, finally emptying into Lake Dunstan. Its raging rapids and deadly undertows have long made it a playground for only the boldest kayakers and rafters. But soon, cyclists and hikers will experience this untamed beauty from an entirely new perspective.
The Trail Experience : What to Expect.
Starting at the end of the Gibbston River Trail, riders will immediately encounter one of the South Island’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, The Nevis Bluff. This 500m stretch of Grade 6 whitewater is legendary among adrenaline junkies - a roaring, churning beast that has claimed lives but will soon be admired (from a safe distance) by thousands.
From there, the trail winds deep into the Kawarau Gorge, where engineers have tackled some of the most challenging terrain in New Zealand. Suspended bridges, cantilevered "clip-on" trail sections, and carefully carved pathways will guide riders, runners and hikers past steep bluffs and hidden valleys, offering non-stop drama at every turn.
Must-See Stops Along the Way.
While the trail itself is the star, the journey is packed with fascinating detours :
Whatatorere Natural Bridge remnants - Walk in the footsteps of 19th-century gold miners and early Māori who crossed here.
Roaring Meg Power Station - A striking hydroelectric station.
Gold Fields Mining Centre & Panners Bar & Kitchen - Try your luck at gold panning or refuel with local wine and hearty food.
Bannockburn Wineries - The Cromwell end of the trail leads to Felton Road, home of world-class vineyards - perfect for a post-ride celebration.
A Legacy in the Making.
This trail is more than just a path, it’s the result of years of collaboration between local councils, engineers, conservationists, and trail advocates. When it opens in early 2026, it won’t just be a new route, it’ll be a must-ride destination, drawing cyclists from across the country (and the world).
Final Verdict? Start Planning Now.
While we can only really assume what the trail might be like, we can look to the nearby Dunstan Trail for some answers.
Difficulty is probably likely to be a medium grade with some exposed sections and at entire length, a long, full day ride.
The route will be able to be ridden in both directions.
Cell coverage will be minimal as there is currently no coverage on the road through the gorge.
Regardless of the information we have available, the trail is remote and pickup/support options will be limited.
Whether you're a hardcore cyclist, casual rider, or hiking enthusiast, the Kawarau Gorge Trail promises an unforgettable adventure through some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes. We’re calling it now! This will be one of the South Island’s greatest trails!

DISCLAIMER!
While we're all very excited about the trail opening and are actively planning amazing tours through the area, we must stress to everyone that the trail is still very much under construction, and as such remains an active workplace with many hazards. Whether you're a local or a tourist visiting the area, please keep off the trail at all times and respect the process that the professionals are following to get this epic piece of trail opened for you all to enjoy.
We can't wait for that tape to be cut and see you on the trail! 🚵♂️💨
